Yushan World Open Day 3

The snooker train rattles on in China and on day three in afternoon’s play Graeme Dott played Shaun Murphy and  if anyone thought this was going to be a easy match for Murphy, they were mistaken. Dott got off to a cracking start, taking the first three frames in succession. Dott has been threatening a comeback for some time and maybe today was the run of form that was needed. Murphy was frankly outplayed in this match and only managed a scrap of comfort but talking one frame to avoid the dreaded whitewash. The 5-1 score line just shows how well this granite player played and put Murphy’s ambition in this tournament, quickly to bed.

Winning seems to be infectious in this event and today was all about punishing your opponent with a damaging lead. Players like Jack Lisowski proved this with a 5-1 win over Xiao Guodong, David Gilbert obliterated Antony McGill, 5-0, Mark Selby had a trouble free match with Saengkham, beating him, 5-2 and Ali Carter put an end to Alfie Burden’s run in this this year’s World Open by winning 5-2. There were also great wins for Joe Perry who took out Stuart Carrington in a closer match and Mark Allen kept his dreams alive in this year’s tournament by winning his match against Zhang Anda, 5-3. Kyren Wilso also squeaked through his match against Hossein Vafaei, 5-4.

This general trend of thumping score lines spilled into the evening with John Higgins taking in Mark Davis. Davis has played well in recent years and has been one of those players that has put the age theory to a player’s decline in snooker to bed. However today he came up against John Higgins and despite a recent threat to retire, has managed to bring his best play back into tournaments in recent months. Today was no exception and If Davis wanted to feel what pressure was like, he only had to describe this match. John inflicted a 5-1 defeat on the Sussex man and Davis will be disappointed that he didn’t play better.

Thepchaiya Un-Nooh also showed his worth in his match against Craig Steadman, winning 5-2, Zhao Yuelong showed no fear against Fergal O’Brien and dispatched they Irishman with a whitewash, 5-0 and Elliot Slessor wasn’t so lucky today when he played Songsermsawad, losing, 5-1. The highlight of evening playing was the thrilling match between Judd Trump and Liang Wenbo. Both players who are not afraid to take on the difficult shot, Wenbo is more excitable than Nudd but plays a similar game. This match was going to be close and so it proved with both players having good runs in the match but in the end Trump apples a game that few can beat and on this occasion Wenbo was at the losing end, 3-5.

There were also wins for Michael Holt who took out a major scalp, Barry Hawkins, 5-3 and Martin O’Donnell was left reeling after Ding Junhui continued to progress in this competition, winning 5-2. This competition is definitely a slower burner and with O’Sullivan, Murphy and Hawkins now out of this year’s event, the other top players will breathing a sigh of relief that their chances haveI been scuppered yet. Judd Trump looks deadly at this stage but must avoid the pitfalls that this competition could spring on him. If he can do that as he had proved on numerous occasions this season, he will be holding silverware aloft at the end of the week.
