Day 5 At The World Cup

Another day and another series of matches on Day 5 at the World Cup with China B who currently too the table taking on the promising Wales team.with both sides tangling each other in snookers at the end of the first frame.and China B just making it over the line. The second frame was strewn with errors and both teams having their chances but relief for Ryan Day as he gained momentum and took the frame. In the next, the doubles, Wales were dominant and ended with China B conceding the frame and with all to play for in the reverse singles, Wales were dominant again and I was especially impressed by Ryan Day’s game. The last was won by Wales despite a late surge by the Chinese team and the inspired effort by Wales to pinch the last frame, means they are now top the table, winning 4-1

Elsewhere, the dominant England played Northern Ireland with all sorts of outcomes possible in the group. With Northern Ireland having lost two of their matches and England having won all theirs. Northern Ireland had to win and win big in this match as they were relying on the nine points accumulated from match frame wins. An impressive start by the man from Antrim, Mark Allen, took the first with a 113 break. Kyren Wilson replied in the second with a win that sealed their place in the quarter finals stage as a a possible winner or runner up of the group table.Northern Ireland counter attacked in the third frame with Mark Allen accruing another century with a 116 break. England took the next two frames to take a 3-2 lead.with an 89 break and so won the match.

There were also greats wins for Belgium with a 4-1 win over Israel and now top their Round Robin Group and India inflicted a 4-1 win on Malta. Earlier, there was a shock win by Thailand over the dominant China A in Group A, winning 3-2 and sending them through to the knockout stages.More shock occurred in the Belgium v Scotland match when Luca Brecel won the last frame and leapfrogged Belgium to the top of the Group C, ahead of Scotland, winning 3-2.

One of the greatest spats that occurred in snooker history was between my friend Alain Robidoux and Ronnie O’Sullivan. It occurred in 1996 at the World Championship. Ronnie, a then young whipper snapper at 19, trounced Alain in the match, winning 10-3. However beyond the win, a spat occurred when Ronnie decided to take a number of shots left handed. Robidoux criticised O’Sullivan after the match for being “disrespectful”. Ronnie hit back at Alain saying “if he wants to act like a baby that’s up to him” adding “ the crowd enjoyed it, that’s the main thing”. This was probably the first time that a player had dared to take multiple shots left handed and led to players attempting the same feat. Match fixing in snooker has unfortunately been in operation since the very early days of the game with reports of Joe Davis having "carried" weaker opponents in multi-session matches to maximise the gate revenue. Players may not enter a match fixing agreement on their own free will, being subject to threats of violence if they fail to submit. Revered by players in our sport, Paul Hunter was one of the best players that snooker has ever seen but whose life was sadly cut short by cancer. Paul was instantly recognisable for his good looks and flamboyant style, being the only player I have known to play who has managed to play with a hair band and pull it off successfully.
