Ranting Ronnie
Ronnie O’Sullivan has often made the headlines in recent with his irrational outbursts regarding his around snooker. Now it seems World Snooker has felt he has taken a step too far and referred his latest outburst to the disciplinary board. Earlier in the week, Barry Hearn held his annual press conference and made a series of announcements regarding changes to the sport. One such alteration to the current structure was the decision to change the rolling money system for the 147. £5,000 added to each tournament has been scrapped. Instead there will be a million pound pot which will be shared between the players who make a 147 if 20 or more are made in a season.
This was the flashpoint for Ronnie and so the words of attrition poured from his mouth. branding Hean as a “cross between Del Boy and Arthur Daley” for his 147 announcement. World Snooker has now seen seen sense and putting a gagging clause on O’Sullivan, citing his outburst as a breach of his contract and referred the case to the disciplinary council. Ronnie has for far too long had a free reign in our sport and has adopted a blasé attitude when commenting on the game. Following earlier outbursts on a so called “breakaway tour”, the poor conditions of venues, attacking the performance of other players and various threats to quit, Ronnie has now overstepped the mark and should be reprimanded with heavy punitive action.
This punitive action should be just a monetary fine because O’Sullivan clearly wouldn’t care as it would be a drop in the ocean for him. Ronnie is a multi millionaire and a mere fine would be like someone losing loose change. It has to be action that is stringent and opens this player’s eyes and makes him think before he opens his mouth. As I have stated before, O’Sullivan has a “Jekyll and Hyde” personality and has a potty mouth. He is clearly talented player on the table but off it he descends into a state of degradation, picking his moments for his next jibe at World Snooker.
This behaviour infuriates me and it is not clear whether the committee will make a firm decision, describing the action as “possible”. I understand you can’t prejudge a decision but this wishy washy attitude does nothing to enforce the standards set in writing in a player’s snooker contract. Ronnie may feel that he can flit in and out of the sport but that does not give him the right to bring the game into disrepute by the constant verbal outbursts to the media. O’Sullivan is a maverick and doesn’t even mingle with other players, choosing instead to have a small entourage of people around him. The idea behind this being that they feed him with positivity to conquer his negativity but clearly Ronnie need to expand his friendship portfolio. Perhaps then, he will realised the error of his ways and start spouting praise instead of criticism.
Any genius has their chronic flaw and with Ronnie it is his own insecurities. He can’t bear the fact that he could be yesterday’s man one day. He tries to shrug off his defeats but it is clear now that this once well oiled machine is getting slightly rusty with age. Perhaps he realises this and doesn’t have the mental strength to cope with and play his “A” game constantly.Whatever the true explanation, Ronnie will be a top class player and go down in history as one of the true greats but unlike Reardon, Davis and Hendry, his mouth continues to let him down. Rein it in Ronnie and stop damaging your reputation and that of the sport you play in!
