Finally!

So after 16 days of snooker at the Crucible, we finally find out today on the 17th who will be this year’s World Champion? Two snooker gladiators, John Higgins and Judd Trump will battle it it out for what is seen as the pinnacle of the snooker calendar and the golden nugget to put on any player ‘s CV. Both players must be fatigued from their matches yesterday with Judd winning comfortably and John having to fight to overturn a deficit and cross the winning line.

The final is a replay of the 2011 match that saw Trump have Higgins under the cosh with a healthy lead but Judd then in his infancy let the match slip and Higgins used his years of experience to win the turtle of minds. This time Trump has the advantage with a comfortable win over Gary Wilson and Higgins on the other hand had to dig deep to beat David Gilbert. However Higgins is like a dog with a bone that you have to scrape off the table before any player can claim victory over him. Probably one the best sportsman of all time, John is hungry for another World Championship title and  still has the appetite for success despite recent threats to retire from the sport after poor season form.

Trump on the other hand, is aiming for his first World Championship title. This is chance for him to join the final piece of the puzzle of the Triple Crown. I am a great admirer of Judd’s style of play, his “naughty snooker” is  entertaining and attacking but it does have several flaws. He often misses when he is in play and has to pot himself out of trouble to regain position. This causes a confidence crisis in  his brain and often removes him from “the zone “. Judd is his own worst enemy because he doubts himself and when you doubt yourself, doubt will creep into your game and destroy any chance of victory.

Higgins knows he has a formidable opponent today and he will have muster up all his experience to beat the heir apparent. However the Crucible creates a rollercoaster of drama at every stage and fails to to amaze or disappoint its audience. If Judd wins, he will be proved as one of the greatest in snooker history but if he fails, he will branded as another nearly man. Higgins on the other hand has nothing to lose and goes into the match with a win, win scenario, if he wins he adds to his bulging trophy cabinet and if he loses, he has won the title multiple times. The only thing that can be hurt is Higgins’ pride. The Scot wants glory and on camera, a feat that he feels he deserves on this Bank Holiday Monday and one that he has had to fight over multiple days to reach.

Snooker is an odd sport because anything can happen and the only thing certain is that one player will triumph. I hope that Judd can bring his full game to this final and erase his negativity. If he died this, I feel he will win this esteemed title for the first time. He certainly deserves it and had worked hard this season to claim several seasonal titles. However the Bristolian must score heavily and take his chances when Higgins falters. This will be a war of two generations, the class of 1992 against the new generation, if John wins, three players that class will rule rule the top eight, O”Sullivan, Higgins and Williams. The moment of truth will br decided early or late tonight and the deserved winner will bathe in Crucible glory and raise the famous trophy aloft.
