An Early Christmas Present

Christmas comes early this year as snooker fans are given the opportunity to watch some of the greatest names in snooker history compete at the Crucible. The Seniors event on 11/04/19, brings together the likes of Doherty, Johnson, Hendry, Parrott, Thorburn and White. For any lover of snooker, this really is a special occasion and brings a lot of snooker memories flooding back.

Having never been to the Crucible, this will be a first for me too. Although not attending for the World Championship, this really is the next best thing and hopefully I will meet some of my snooker heroes and my friends on the circuit.Going to an event like this, you really get a buzz leading up to the event and the fantastic time you have on the actual day. Sometimes I really have to pinch myself that I know so many people in the sport and so many recognise me when I am in the Player’s Lounge.

Even as I am writing this blog, I am getting goosebumps from thinking about entering the Crucible Theatre for the first time, Like a time capsule, the theatre holds so many memories of those great matches that you now have to search for on a grainy You Tube clip.The Crucible really is the Mecca of any fan, few get to go there and when you do, it is an occasion that will never be forgotten, etched in your mind.

I also get to stay in the same hotel as the players so maybe I will be have a relaxing night cap with Ken Doherty or Joe Johnson, a time for a catch up and a few laughs with my snooker family. The hotel looks beautiful and is only a stone ‘s throw or should say a pocket away from the Crucible itself. This, remarkably, will be the first time I have ever gone north of the border and am so looking forward to experiencing the great culture and people of this great city of Sheffield.

So if you at at a loose end next week, why not go online and book a ticket for this great event. You will not be disappointed and will get to see some of the greatest players that this sport has ever produced in action. This prequel to the great World Championship itself, fills the void between the China Open and the World Championship, allowing you to see of the greats raise the roof and silverware in the greatest theatre in town. Can’t wait to experience the atmosphere and cheer on my snooker heroes!

Snooker was first born millions of miles away from the UK in a small town in the Nilgiri hills of Southern India. Recently Dennis Taylor went to this club and played on the first ever table produced. The Ooty Colonial Club was set up amongst 65 hill stations for the British army. Built by Sir William Rumbold In 1836, the club was built in a colonial style  and houses a bar and billiard room. A relic of the Raj period, the mixed bar still has a strict dress code and is set in a building and surrounding area that could be produced by bursting a time bubble and even has the original ball room. Match fixing in snooker has unfortunately been in operation since the very early days of the game with reports of Joe Davis having "carried" weaker opponents in multi-session matches to maximise the gate revenue. This trait continued through the history of the sport with players such as Willie Thorne and Alex Higgins claiming they were offered large sums of money to lose matches. Players may not enter a match fixing agreement on their own free will, being subject to threats of violence if they fail to submit. The lucrative criminal act is largely based in the Far East where gangs devise money making scams in various sports, using their players to infiltrate the individual sport and extract multimillion currency earnings. Which way, left or right?

One of the greatest spats that occurred in snooker history was between my friend Alain Robidoux and Ronnie O’Sullivan. It occurred in 1996 at the World Championship. Ronnie, a then young whipper snapper at 19, trounced Alain in the match, winning 10-3. However beyond the win, a spat occurred when Ronnie decided to take a number of shots left handed. Robidoux criticised O’Sullivan after the match for being “disrespectful”. Ronnie hit back at Alain saying “if he wants to act like a baby that’s up to him” adding “ the crowd enjoyed it, that’s the main thing”. This was probably the first time that a player had dared to take multiple shots left handed and led to players attempting the same feat. Perhaps this wouldn’t have been become a regular occurrence if this hadn’t of happened. This snooker bust up led to Alain refusing to shake Ronnie’s hand at the end of the match.
